Prevalence and Morphological Types of Anaemia among Severely Anaemic Children Admitted in Hospitals in Bushenyi District, Uganda

Severe anaemia is a major cause of paediatric hospital admissions and deaths in many African countries, especially Sub-Saharan Africa. In resource-limited nations with poor diagnostic capacity, the morphological type gives insight into probable anaemia. The study described prevalence types among severely anaemic children aged 2 months to 12 years age admitted at three hospitals Bushenyi district. A cross-sectional descriptive 225 wards district, Kampala International University Teaching Hospital, Comboni Ishaka Adventist Hospital from April 2017 December 2017. Data was collected using structured questionnaire, entered Excel analysed STATA 2016. Proportions were used obtain severe 8.1%. Of this prevalence, 71.6% under five years. normocytic normochromic (56.4%), microcytic hypochromic (27.1%) macrocytic (16.4%). common majority had normochromic, followed by We therefore recommend that clinicians should routinely screen for proper management presenting our health facilities.
